| Friday Night Bible Study (FNBS) |
I think God is so cool. He knows exactly whats going on in our heads: our worries, desires.. everything. Last friday we went through Matt 20:1-16. A summary would be that the kingdom of heaven is like a vineyard, and God the landowner. Early in the morning, the landowner went out to hire workers. He agreed on a rate of $x per day with some workers, and they started work. In the late morning, he went out and he saw some more workers and hired them at the same rate. The same thing happened twice more in the afternoon. Finally, in the evening, he went out again and saw several workers there. He asked them why they were still standing there. They said "Because noone has hired us". So he hired them for the same $x per day. After an hour, the day officially ended, and he told them to line up in reverse order to be paid. So those who came last were paid $x, as were the first. And obviously, those who were hired first complained when they received $x, saying that they worked more and so deserved more. The landowner then answered "I have done you no wrong. Didn't you agree to work for $x a day?" There were several things that struck me as so true when we went through the passage. God came out searching for us. He doesn't need us, yet he comes out for us. Not once, but many times, even until the very last hour. Our leader asked us to think about the many times that God has given us chances to believe in him, to respond to him -and I have to admit that it is so true. He's been so patient, and he still is. What would it feel like to be a part of that last group to be hired? Good? No way man.. they had to live with the uncertainty of not having food for their family that night, the humiliation of not being hired, the stigma of still standing there as if there was something wrong with them. I think all of us are a part of this group at least once in our lives. I know that I hate uncertainty, mini control freak that I am. To me, not being wanted is one of the worst feelings ever. So can you imagine the last group's relief when they were hired? I guess I fall into the category of one of the earlier groups-and my lesson is that I should be thankful for not having that burden of not knowing to bear. Since I was "hired" early, I should devote whatever I have to his work. Its a pleasure to know that even though he's so much above me, he still cares so much for me. There was something that someone else said that struck me too : "If you read a letter that my mom wrote to me, without knowing our relationship, you'd find it insulting because she says things like you should slim down and exercise etc. But if you knew she was my mother, it would make so much more sense right? Thats the same with the word of God, it won't make sense unless you have that personal relationship" Something to chew on indeed. |

Whoa.. I've managed to blissfully not blog for a whole month and more. Lol. I did have a lot on my hands.. and feet.. and head.. Summary?
March 24th - Sleepover at Dexter House So.. its not that they named the house, just that its on Dexter St. Its where most of the Wellesley church staff (who are also alums) live. They're ordinary people who go to grad school, work, play, but do extraordinary things by being our mentors, leaders and friends. I've learnt so much about sacrificial love for friends from them. It was during spring break, so they invited the first years and 2 upperclasswomen still on campus to stay over. We had awesome korean food, apple pie a la mode, and basically a lot of fun. It was here that I watched the Incredibles again- on dvd so I got to see the extras, which were really funny. Another cool thing I did over spring break? Watched the entire Buffy season 7 generously loaned by my writing prof. It was really good.. April 7th - Phantom of the Opera at the Opera House, Boston Soooo beautiful. It was truly an experience to remember. The "phantom"'s voice was lovely, haunting and if I may say, sexy at the same time. Somehow I felt that his character was portrayed as too needy and too pathetic. Maybe its meant to be like that. Some say that I should go watch the movie, because the movie has a really cool Masquerade scene. Maybe I'll find someone to borrow it from. Haven't watched a movie since I stayed over at the staff house.. which was.. when? oh 24th March. Spring break. Back up I guess.. April 9th - Christian Festival @ Lowell Auditorium, Harvard University Sponsored by our church, put together by our staff, performed by us undergrads and grads. What? A performance that includes songs, dances, video and acting, done by class, so I was in the freshman class. We had a really cool skit + songs+ dance that made it seem like a mini-musical, with really great props and a cool video during intro and between sets to boot. Its the first time I've actually acted, come to think of it.. and I've no idea how I managed to learn all the lines, words and moves in 3 weeks. Well, we met on Friday nights after bible study, usually at MIT from 10pm- 1am.. and for the week before the performance we met 4 times a week, from 9pm till late. I would've never imagined myself in such an endeavour before, especially one that demands so much from me. Plus, it was major midterm week at that time, so while I was staying up late etc, I was also taking 3 exams and things like that. I can only say that God has proven to be faithful and miraculous through my experience with that. Nothing was by my own strength or smartness- it was all Him and His grace. April 11th - Surprises I almost forgot about this day, until my mom called a day early, as well as my bro and my dad. Lol. They're really funny. Apparently my bro has sth for me, but we have yet to meet. Monica my dear leader planned a surprise in the form of extra people turning up at dinner at Amarind, a pretty little Thai restaurant. She did a good job too, until the end when she said "table for 8" - and that made me confused. Later on we had cake at Hemlock too.. and I learnt that I'm pretty gullible when it comes to this kind of thing. Ayako got me this really cool book by Dr. Seuss, which matches the cushion that Jer sent - Thanks! Happy Birthday to my twin too.. Sorry I lost your add for a while, and by the time I found it I decided to send/pass it to you later. And of course I got to hear from the 6 of us, which was really sweet.. Leong called too! April 16th and 17th - Staff appreciation prep & Pre-Marathon Pasta Party Headed out to MIT on Sat to work on gifts for the staff, we got them miniatures of the props we had, as well as started on recordings of parodies of songs that we sang. I think our freshman class is the coolest. We've got so many talented people, as well as cool ideas. Ended up staying pretty late though, because of the number of things to do. Wanted to sleep over, but needed bible etc for church the next day, as well as my volunteer card for Sunday. Left church a little early to go volunteer for the pre-marathon dinner.. and had a great time taking trash from people's tables! Haha.. it was fun just walking about talking a little to people.. And at the end we got a cool jacket, which is even branded! We're definitely going back next year. April 18th - 109th Boston Marathon + Spring Carnival at Wellesley. Wellesley's Scream Tunnel is famous around the marathonner's community. They run past our college, which is about the middle of their marathon, and we form a long stretch of noise to cheer them on, give them fives, and for some people, get kisses. I kid you not- there were signs that said "Kiss me!". Lol. We had spring carnival on the meadow as well, and that was fun too 'cos ABSK sold out on our homemade pearl teas. There was a fried dough stall, lunch was BBQ outside by the dining hall staff, and a band was playing. April 20th - Chilling for the first time in months. Went for a run/ walk with Linda and enjoyed the last day of sunshine before 10 days of colder weather again. Had enough time to update blog! Sweet... |
